DAY 91 - 2016 WEIGHT LOSS AND BLOOD GLUCOSE CHALLENGE

January 11, 2016

Today is Day 91 - LAST DAY!

Weight goal - 136.2 or lower
Actual weight - 138

Blood glucose goal - 75 or lower
Actual blood glucose - 86

Today is a Fast Day.

For me, that means that all I will have today is water, coffee, tea, or broth, all without caloric sweeteners or fat.  Each day, I will weigh in, check my fasting blood glucose, find out if I will feast or fast that day, update my chart and post it here on the big blog. I'm posting it to motivate myself not to give up, and if I think that anyone is looking at this, it will help to keep me accountable.

Last day! Yesterday I ate lunch with my family and then I had a few morsels of other stuff later in the day.  Today, because it is my last day and I want to finish strong, I am water fasting.  No broth, no coffee or tea and no Stevia.  I have my timer set for one hour, and I will be drinking 8 oz. of water each hour until bedtime, with my first being at 7 am this morning.

In order to totally win the challenge, my weight needs to be 136 or lower in the morning, and my FBG needs to be 75 or lower.

Yesterday, I gained 1.8 pounds.  To win tomorrow, I need to lose 2 pounds before tomorrow morning's final weigh-in.  I've done it before and I'm hoping I will do it again.

Even if I don't hit 136 pounds and 75 FBG, I will consider it close enough to a win to call this challenge a success.

90 DAYS DOWN AND 1 DAY TO GO

55 FEAST DAYS AND 36 FAST DAYS - FASTING 40% OF THE DAYS

16 POUNDS GONE AND 2 POUNDS TO GO

89% OF THE WAY TO MY GOAL AFTER 99% OF THE DAYS

7-DAY AVERAGE WEIGHT - 137.2

7-DAY AVERAGE FASTING BLOOD GLUCOSE - 77

I made a few charts to track my progress.  The grey lines are my long term goals. The blue lines are my actual results.  The red lines are my 7-day averages. The last chart is a little heat map to show at a glance how often I have actually had to fast to achieve the results I am after. Click on any chart or photo to enlarge it.

This is a personal challenge just for me, but if anyone reading would like to join me, please talk to your doctor and make sure that it will not conflict with your current medical condition or medications.  If you are taking the challenge, please be sure to let me know how you are doing!  Thanks for reading!

  1. Hello Rebecca. I've been following your progress and I am interested in trying this out. I understand the weight calculations for each day but I am unclear of how you and Marty set up your blood glucose goals. Could you explain a little further and help me maybe set up a program. Thank you

    1. Hi, Bill, and thanks for reading!

First of all, be sure to check with your doctor and make sure that doing something like this will not conflict with your current medications or medical condition.

I can't give medical advice, but I can tell you how I set myself up to lower my FBG. My FBG was around 108-110 when I started, and I wanted it to get down to around 75. I just knew that I was going to be doing the challenge for 91 days, and I wanted to reduce the FBG down to 75, so I made a plan to try to reduce it by 0.25 point each day, so every four days would see it come down a full point.

This particular plan may not be what is the best for you, so I suggest that you talk to your doctor and see if this would be appropriate for you, or if something different might be better.

This post shows how I came up with the number 75 for my FBG. Again, that number might not be the best for you. http://lowcarbbetterhealth.blogspot.com/2016/03/day-63-2016-weight-loss-and-blood.html

Please let me know how it goes!

  3. Thanks Rebecca. I do a lot of fasting already so I am good to go. I am just unsure how energetic to get with my fbs. I guess taking the 7 day average will work. How do you decide when bs is OK. And try to maintain. I try and keep mine below 80. Its not uncommon for me to do 3-5 day fasts with a couple of dry fasts thrown in. Can't wait to see the write up.

    1. Hi, Bill!

Are you diabetic? Do you check your BG throughout the day or only fasting?

The summary post is now live.

  4. Yes I am diabetic. I test morning and Eve usually. I take no meds and control with diet and fasting. While fasting it's not uncommon for me to be consistently in the sixties. While I'm eating lchf I usually stay in the seventies to low eighties.

    1. Bill, if my numbers were like yours, I would say good is good and not stress myself about going any lower.
