MAY 9, 2009 - SPLENDA, TRUVIA AND STEVIA

Here is a post from another thread from Karen (BeachbuminMT), on the topic of Splenda. I had just said that I just read that Maltodextrin, the main ingredient in Splenda, should be avoided at all costs, for it is a Frankenfood. Karen responded:

Right up there with HFCS (high fructose corn syrup), IMO. Well, maybe not that bad, but almost. It's in a lot of "sugar-free" products. I still keep it around to use when something absolutely HAS to taste like sugar. And it does cook well. Hubby loves Splenda and says the other sweeteners are crap! I pointed out to him that it's not the sucralose he likes, but the maltodextrin. I don't push the issue - small victories! Baby steps!

I think probably overall, real Stevia, not the now-marketed Truvia, is probably the best bet.

Have you seen Truvia's website?

You’re first hit with how natural it is: "Water. Sunshine. Nutrients from the earth. That's what goes into the stevia plant. Then nature works her magic and creates a wonderfully sweet taste."
Now...click on the Ingredients tab: Erythritol, ribiana, natural flavors. Ribiana: Rebiana is the trade name[1] for a zero-calorie sweetener containing mainly the steviol glycoside rebaudioside A (reb-A), which is extracted from stevia. (I guess this is the Stevia.)

Back to the same thing, the main ingredient is not the natural herb, Stevia, but a sugar alcohol. And the stevia itself is extremely processed!

I guess since it DOES contain stevia, the law allows the company to get away with the advertising claims!

Rebecca says:

I have a box and a half of Splenda that I am going to throw in the trash. One box has 1000 packets, and the other box about 600.

My decision today is to not use Splenda anymore, or things that contain Splenda. For sweetener, I use liquid Stevia.

MAY 9, 2009 - "AGELESS" BY SUZANNE SOMERS, STATINS AND OLD AGE

The main reason I started natural, bio-identical hormone replacement was because I had read the book “Ageless”. I highly recommend this book to everyone, men and women alike, whether you think you have hormonal imbalances or not.

One of my biggest goals right now is to get my husband off the 6 or 7 meds he is on right now just to manage cholesterol and blood pressure. Even though he is in normal ranges now, his doc wants him to stay on them. Maybe we need to start with a new doc!

Now that he is eating healthy, my opinion is that he can get off or cut down on the meds and if his levels go back up a little initially, I know they will work their way back down eventually.

I know that the only reason he got on them in the first place was because his doctor was too quick to prescribe without first suggesting (he did not even suggest!) life style changes, like diet and exercise.

When I googled the meds he is on, even the pharmaceutical companies said that the drugs were only to be prescribed if lifestyle changes don't work!

Random thought:

I heard the other day that life expectancies are going up, and that, for the baby born today, the life expectancy will be 120 years. I'm not sure of the accuracy of that statement, but I'm not surprised by it - it seems logical.

Think about it... Through medical science, people can now be kept alive for long periods of time. In the "olden days" before antibiotics, if a person got a bad cut on their arm, they could easily die of infection. No more! Well, not usually.

And this is a major problem!

But how can it be a problem that we now have the medical knowledge and technology to keep people alive longer? Doesn't everyone want to live longer?

Maybe not! What about quality of life? Have you seen these really old people in nursing homes? Possibly your own parent, or grandparent? Sometimes unable to move around freely, think clearly or make their own life decisions. As the old joke goes, "You call this living?" I watched my grandmother die like that. She prayed every day for God to "take her home." She was old and useless, in her view, at 88. I don't want my grandmother's health when I am 88. I don't want to be living in a nursing home, dying of diabetes and cancer and completely out of control of my circumstances.

We need to take control of our health, and go into our 70s, 80s, 90s and yes, even our 100s in good health, vital to our families and communities, living in our own homes, supporting ourselves, managing our own lives and loving it!

This is my quest. I'm going to find out how to be healthy if it kills me!

On statins, from Ageless by Suzanne Somers (2006), interviewing Dr. Eugene Shippen on men and hormones:

ES: Statins inhibit the ability of your body to generate its own cholesterol. So if we lower cholesterol, there's a clear reduction in events with the studies on statins. There are reductions of stroke, and there is a reduction of heart attack of 20, 25, 30 percent, depending on the study.

However, long-term studies have failed to show any improvement in overall mortality rate. It's interesting that if you lower the major cause of death by 25 or 30 percent, you don't see an upside on longevity of an equivalent amount. So what's happening? We're becoming unhealthy in other ways. But they don't seem to report on what is causing these other people to die.

The brain itself makes its own little neurosteroids by manufacturing its own cholesterol in the brain. So if we inhibit the body's ability to make it's own cholesterol, are we also inhibiting the ability of the body fo make its own neurosteriods?

(Dr. Shippen goes on to explain in some detail that by inhibiting your brain's production of cholesterol, you also inhibit its production of neuroprotective hormones that control the Alzheimer's process.)

He continues: [With] high cholesterol, researchers found a lower incidence of Alzheimer's disease. So people with higher cholesterol have a lower incidence of Alzheimer's disease. Is it because they have more precursors to making their own neurosteroids? It is an interesting question.

It makes sense that the good Lord put our cholesterol-forming enzymes in our brain for a reason. And if He wanted us tp make cholesterol in the brain, cholesterol is a good antioxidant. You know, it's not just a neutral molecule. It's not a bad guy that needs to be eliminated. It's there for a reason. Cholesterol forms the backbone of every single neuorsteriod in the brain.

(He then goes on to talk in some detail about how, if your hormones are intact, cholesterol doesn't damage the arteries.)

Later in the book, Ms. Somers interviews Dr. Larry Webster on Inflammation and the Environment.

LW: All physicians seem to care about is cholesterol, which is really an indicator of low thyroid more than anything else. Generally, they don't look at cardio-protective compounds such as CoQ10 or L-carnitine. But men are given Lipitor, Mevacor, and other statin drugs, which basically displaces CoQ10 from the body. CoQ10 provides energy and increases cardiac efficiency. So what happens when you take statins is that the body can run out of energy, and ironically, the heart may be affected. So instead of treating high cholesterol with a statin, a doctor should be looking at the thyroid levels first. In fact, this connection is well accepted in the textbook of endocrinology, where it explains hypercholesterolemia is related to hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid). So when a man comes in with high cholesterol, I first check thyroid TSH, T4 and T3. But more than blood results, you have to go on symptoms such as cold hands and feet, tiredness, high cholesterol, hair loss, weight gain, all symptoms you see in both men and women with underactive thyroid.

MAY 8, 2009 - GOING THE EXTRA MILE

Below is a list of the things that are becoming more and more important to me. Some of these things I have started doing, some I want to do in the near future, and some I dread having to do at all, even though I think they are important!

1. Low Carb Diet

2. Getting a reverse osmosis water filter for my home

3. Eating only organic protein, produce and grains

4. Getting in shape by building muscle rather than "burning off calories" (in the traditional sense), which includes Pilates, Hatha Yoga, strength training and walking

5. Sleeping 9 to 9.5 hours per night, going to bed at a reasonable time and getting up at dawn, so that my full night's sleep is done in the dark

6. Taking a full range of vitamins and supplements

7. Using only biodegradable household cleaning products

8. Eating only fresh foods, nothing processed. No chemicals, no MSG, no preservatives, etc.

9. Living in a chemical free environment, as much as it is in my power to do so

10. Avoiding second-hand cigarette smoke

11. Using natural, bioidentical hormone replacement to bring all my hormones to optimum levels, to feel better in general, and to avoid disease in particular

12. Avoiding pharmaceutical and over-the-counter drugs unless absolutely necessary

13. Avoiding stress when possible, and practicing stress reduction techniques when stress is unavoidable

14. Detoxing my body, following my doctor's advice about how to do that

15. Creating a healthy GI tract

16. Spending less time watching TV

17. Spending more time outdoors

18. Spending more time reading and doing research on healthy lifestyles

19. Spending quality time with my husband and other family members and friends

20. Spending quality time with God.

Obviously, especially based on the last item, this list is not in order by importance! As time goes on, I will add to my list, or post things here that pertain to my list.

MAY 4, 2009 - THE FAT FAST

When I fist did Atkins back in 2000, I tried the Fat Fast that was recommended in the 1992 book "Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution". IN the book, he said that if you can't lose weight, you should try eating only 1000 calories a day with 85-90% fat. I tried it, and it worked, but as soon as I started eating food again, I immediately started gaining weight again.

But after 7 weeks of doing Atkins, I did the fat fast and did not tell anyone. In order to not go into "starvation mode", I kept the calories high at 1600 and ate mostly fat. I did lose a few pounds, but as soon as I ate real food again, the weight came right back.

Why did Dr. Atkins even suggest this?

MAY 4, 2009 - STANDARD ATKINS IS NOT WORKING

At this point in my journey, I was ready to throw in the towel. I contacted Colette Heimowitz, who is the Atkins Nutritionist. She told me to cut my calories down to 1400, which is 100 calories below the official recommendation for women – 1500 to 1800 calories. She also told me to cut my net carbs to 11, which is only half the recommended amount during Induction, which is the first phase of Atkins.

The idea of cutting back so much is discouraging. The thing I liked about Atkins was the fact that I could "eat as much as I wanted" and did not have to restrict calories.

But if this is what I have to do to lose weight and get healthy, then I am willing to do it. After all, 1400 calories is still 400 calories over what I used to be able to eat...

APRIL 5, 2009 - WEEK 3 INDUCTION RESULTS

Today is my first day in Atkins Ongoing Weight Maintenance! I stayed on Induction for three weeks. I finally have a little "2" by my name! All of you that were strongly urging me to proceed to OWL, you win! Your arguments were very persuasive, and I bow to your experience!

Here is an average of my daily food intake for this past week:

1860 Calories
142.4g Fat (68.9%)
111.1g Protein
33.7g Carbs
13.7g Fiber
20g net carbs, of which 15g came from veggies

Today, I am increasing my veggie net carbs from 15 to 20, for a total of 25 net carbs. In the past, I would not plan ahead and end up with too many at dinner, or lunch, or whatever. So I am going to plan on getting roughly 5 net carbs of veggies at breakfast, 7.5 at lunch and 7.5 at dinner.

Here are the results of my Induction:

Beginning weight - 150
Ending weight - 149
Goal weight - 125
Goal date - September 6, 2009

I've also been keeping track of my measurement of fitday. I measure every Sunday.

Neck 13.75 - 0.00 = 13.75
Bicep 11.75 - 0.25 = 11.50
Forearm 9.00 - 0.00 = 9.00
Chest 38.25 - 0.25 = 38.00
Waist 31.50 - 0.25 = 31.25
Hips 42.00 - 1 = 41.00
Thigh 24.50 - 0.25 = 24.25
Calf 14.50 - 0.25 = 14.25

Total inches lost - 2.25

Slow and steady! I'll take it!

I am taking my supplements, drinking 75 oz. or more of water each day, and walking at a free, indoor track. I am up to walking 1.33 miles at 3.8 mph, so that's 21 minutes of very brisk walking. My plan is to add a minute each day, until I get it up higher.

APRIL 1, 2009 - HORMONE TEST RESULTS - WEIGHT LOSS WILL COME!

If you are interested in how my doctor visit went this morning, or if you’re interested in how hormone imbalances relate to weight loss, read on. If you find both topics utterly boring, you can skip this post!

As some of you know, our doctor put my husband on Atkins on March 15, 2009, and I decided to join him in the adventure! I have extreme difficulty losing weight, and when I tried Atkins in 2000, I gained weight and stopped after a few weeks.

Since starting again, I have only lost 1.5 pounds in 17 days. Although it’s been frustrating, I’ve been sticking with it. I went back to the doctor today to hear the results of my blood and saliva tests. Here are those results and the consequences of each:

1. My progesterone to estrogen ratio should be 200 to 1. Mine is 33 to 1. Due to that, I will continue to gain weight and have an uncomfortable menopause

2. My testosterone should be 55. Mine is 17. Due to that, I will continue to gain weight and lose muscle mass, and no amount of weight lifting will help me build the muscle I need.

3. My thyroid is low because of the progesterone deficiency. Due to that, I will continue to gain weight and have a basal body temperature of 96-97.

4. My cortisol is high. Due to that, I will continue to gain weight, especially in my abdomen. (I used to be pear shaped, now I’m apple shaped.)

5. My body fat should be 23-25%. In 2007, I had 38% body fat. Two years later, I now have 43% body fat. I am 2 pounds heavier now, so that means I have lost 6 pounds of muscle and gained 8 pounds of fat in the past two years. Not good!

6. Because I was able to bring in my Fitday Nutrition Report, it was recognized that, even eating right and taking supplements, I am deficient in Vitamin D, Calcium, Mangnesium and Potassium.

Here is the treatment prescribed by my doctor:

1. Natural bioidentical progesterone replacement therapy, in the form of pills and topical cream, for the rest of my life.

2. Natural bioidentical testosterone replacement therapy, in the form of a pellet surgically placed in the fat of my butt, once every 4-5 months for the rest of my life. That was done today. Ouch! (Not really that painful - I’m just a big baby!)

3. No treatment for the functionally low thyroid. As progesterone improves, thyroid function will return to normal.

4. No treatment for the high cortisol. As hormone levels improve, so will the cortisol level.

5. Start Vitamin D, Calcium, Magnesium and Potassium supplements.

And here’s what my doctor says should be the results of the therapy:

In the next month, I will gain 1.5 to 3 pounds on the scale, but that will be muscle. My measurements will go down even as my weight on the scale goes up. As the months go on, I will gain 10 total pounds of muscle and I will lose 35 pounds of fat. My weight on the scale will decrease by 25 pounds, and I will be a normal weight of 125. Of course, I will continue to eat properly (Atkins, of course!) and exercise. And I’ll have the nice little bonus of little or no menopause symptoms.

My response to all this? I’m ecstatic! I feel like I have been given a whole new lease on life! I feel like I want to go to all the people who didn’t believe that I wasn’t overeating and say, “In your face!”

If you have any reason to believe your inability to lose weight might have to do with an imbalance of your hormones, please see your doctor. I suggest you see one who prescribes natural, bioidentical hormone replacement therapy.

I’ll keep you posted on my progress! And thanks again to all the wonderful people on this Forum who have helped and advised and encouraged me on my path!

Oh, I forgot! The swelling in in face, hands and feet will go away! Yay! Another thing I forgot! My doctor says that Atkins is a perfect companion to my therapy and they will work well together.

MARCH 29, 2009 - WEEK 2 INDUCTION RESULTS

Weight on Day 1 - 150 pounds
Weight on Day 15 - 148.5 pounds

Waist on Day 1 - 31.5"
Waist on Day 15 - 31.5"

Thigh on Day 1 - 24.5"
Thigh on Day 15 - 24" (Yippee!)

Here is an average of my daily food intake for this past week:

1874 Calories

139.5g Fat (67%)

120.4g Protein

34.2g Carbs

13.6g Fiber

20.7g net carbs, of which 15g came from veggies

I have given up cheese and avocado all together, to see if it will help my weight loss. I'm drinking 75 oz. of water every day, sometimes more.

For the first 10 days, I took no supplements. On Day 11 I started taking vitamin/mineral and Omega 3 fish oil supplements.

For the first 14 days, I did no exercise. On Day 15, I began my walking program with an 18 minute mile (3.33 mph).

I am on fitday.com, and I wonder how I lived all this time without it!

I am eating more food than I've ever eaten in my life, and I'm lovin' it!

My only complaints have been a mild headache during week 1, and a few middle of the night leg cramps since I started. Oh, and that I haven't lost 12 pounds at first like some of you guys! :-}

Induction is not always a big weight loss time, as I've been told. So I'm hanging in there! Plus, I am dealing with a medical problem that causes weight gain, so we will see if the resolution of that will help!

For everyone who is struggling with a slow weight loss, you hang in there, too!

Oh, and about moving on into OWL: I will go up to the next level on Day 22 of Induction. I am extremely metabolically resistant, so I've giving myself one more week, but no more! Wherever I am on Day 22, I'm movin' on up!

I am drinking 75 oz. of water each day. I have cut down my cheese to 2 oz. per day, as I have heard too much can stall weight loss with some people.

It's been a good week! It would have been fun to lose more weight, but I'm not dissatisfied! How could I be, with all the wonderful, non-diety food I've been eating all week!

I am going to my granddaughter's 2nd birthday party this afternoon, so wish me luck! I will have nothing that's not on Induction! I would rather go hungry and eat when I get home.

MARCH 15, 2009 - ATKINS - TAKE 2

I would not want anyone to go through what I went through the first time, which also led to the next nine years of yo-yo dieting which left me at the heaviest weight of my life – 158 pounds.

The day I hit my highest weight – February 25, 2009 - was the day that I started The Zone diet. Over the next three weeks, I lost 8 pounds, but I was starving the whole time, eating only 1,000 calories per day. According to that diet, that is the amount of food I would have to eat for the rest of my life! No thanks! I now know that not only is it hard to starve all the time, but it is unhealthy and unnecessary!

When my husband's doctor told him on March 13, 2009, to go back to Atkins, I was heartbroken. Not again! I just can't do it again! And I can't have the two people in my house eating completely different menus, either.

That same night, I found the Atkins website. I looked at what the plan is all about. I couldn't believe it! Vegetables required? Net carbs? If you don’t lose weight, eat 5 net carbs more vegetables? This was not what I remembered from the first time on Atkins…

I read as much as I could on the website that Friday night, made up a shopping list on Saturday and went shopping for low carb foods, plus some really bad food to eat that day. Last chance, right? And on Sunday morning, March 15, 2009, we started Atkins.

MARCH 15, 2009 - MEAT, EGGS AND CHEESE!

On my computer, dated August 31, 2000, is my menu for my first day of Atkins (this was before net carbs - I was just counting carbs):

Breakfast
3 slices bacon (0 carbs)
1 oz. cheese (0 carbs)

Lunch
1/2 cup cooked chicken breast (0)
4 green olives (0)
2 slices bacon (0)
1/4 cup celery (2.1)
2 Tbs. mayo (0)
2 slices deli ham (0)

Dinner
2 hamburger patties (0)
1 oz. cheese (0)
a few bites of vegetables (5.5)
a few bites of pork steak (0)
2 slices American cheese (2)
1 piece low carb chocolate (3)

Total Carbs for the Day - 12.6

Yay! I'm doing Atkins! But wait... I GAINED 2 POUNDS?!

This basic diet went on for 9 days. By then, with going up and down with weight, I was 1.5 pounds heavier than when I started! What was I doing wrong? I was eating less and less every day, trying to get it to work! I was already down to 1000 calories per day, which, when you are eating nothing but protein and fat, is really only a few bites of food each day. Something had to change! I went back to the book, and decided to change what I was eating.

Here is my menu for September 9, 2000:

Breakfast - 2 oz. cream cheese (0)
Lunch - 2 oz. cream cheese (0)
Snack - 2 oz. cream cheese (0)
Dinner - 2 oz. cream cheese (0)
Snack - 2 oz. cream cheese (0)

Weight loss for the day - 2 pounds! Now, I thought, I'm on to something!

I kept this up for 4 total days and lost 5.5 pounds!

The next day, I incorporated a steak into my cream cheese diet, and immediately gained 1/2 pound.

Back to the cream cheese! Another day of cream cheese, and I lost the 1/2 pound again. Whew! That was a close one!

So the next day I tried having an Atkins Advantage Bar and a few macadamia nuts with my cream cheese. I gained another pound!

I guess you can see where this is headed.

I continued to cut calories and carbs, until, at the end of 20 days, I was 5.5 pounds lighter, eating 1000 calories per day, 5-10 total carbs per day ( not net carbs!) and I was starving and miserable!

I even called the Atkins Center, where they put a $75 charge on my credit card and told me I needed to cut out all carbs, and eat nothing but protein and fat. And that if, when I tried to add carbs back in later, I started to gain weight, I should spend the rest of my life eating no carbs.

Would anybody be surprised to know that I quit on Day 21?

In the meantime, my husband was eating all the meat, cheese, fat, and eggs he could stuff in his mouth! Within a few months, he had lost 35 pounds.

As time went on, it didn't seem to be working for him anymore. I accused him of cheating. He denied it. He got off of Atkins and started eating a "regular" American diet again with me and gained back all the weight.

MARCH 15, 2009 - ATKINS - TAKE 1

I thought I would give you a little background on how I got involved with the low carb lifestyle. In the year 2000, all I had heard about Atkins was it was some horrible fad diet that was killing people. Then my dear friend, who was substantially overweight, went on it and lost about 30 pounds really fast.

When she told me what she was doing, I actually said, "Really?! Well, I hope you don't die!" She took that crack pretty well, and calmly told me that I should read the book before I passed judgment.

She was right - all I knew about Atkins were the rumors I had heard about eating pounds of bacon, dozens of eggs and slabs of cheese and butter. Everyone who goes on Atkins has a heart attack, right?

So I read the book. No, I inhaled the book, in one sitting, and I was totally convicted by what I read. By the end of the day, I was asking my husband if he would mind trying a new diet. "You'll like this one," I told him. "All you have to do is eat as much meat, eggs and cheese as you want!" He had 35 pounds to lose and I had 25.

In my haste to absorb the main points of Atkins, I somehow missed a few important things, like that you are supposed to eat veggies. Well, in my defense, he did give an example in the book about a man who could only lose weight and then maintain that weight when he ate zero carb.

We started the next day and ate nothing but meat, fish, fowl, eggs and cheese, all in unlimited quantities. I knew that we were also supposed to eat a small salad and a cup of cooked vegetables each day, but I was afraid to do that part, because my friend didn't do that, and I wanted her success.
