DAY 11 - 2016 WEIGHT LOSS AND BLOOD GLUCOSE CHALLENGE

January 11, 2016
Today is Day 11.

Weight goal - 152 or lower
Actual weight - 149.4

Blood glucose goal - 89 or lower
Actual blood glucose -101

Today is a Fast Day.

For me, that means that all I will have today is water, coffee, tea, or broth, all without caloric sweeteners or fat.  Each day, I will weigh in, check my fasting blood glucose, find out if I will feast or fast that day, update my chart and post it here on the big blog. I'm posting it to motivate myself not to give up, and if I think that anyone is looking at this, it will help to keep me accountable.

Yesterday, I had Bullet Proof Coffee with chocolate protein powder for breakfast, eggs, fried onions, bacon grease, cream cheese, salsa, turmeric, salt and coffee for lunch, and pork rinds with sour cream, beef roast, cauliflower, broccoli, carrots, sea salt and butter for dinner.

But here is the problem:  One of my rules is no snacking between meals, but a good business thing happened yesterday afternoon, and I decided to celebrate by buying and eating one of those little single serving packs of nuts you see at the gas station.  I did not check the carb count (I don't know why), but I figured a small pack of nuts was pretty harmless. When I saw what my blood glucose was this morning, I dug the empty package out of the trash.  Keeping in mind that the high end of my carbs each day is around 20g, imagine my dismay when I saw that it had 18g of carbs per serving, and that little, tiny package said it contained 2.5 servings!  So that means that I not only broke my rules by eating a snack, but that snack contained 45g of carbs!

So, without actually counting everything else I ate yesterday, I probably had around 65g of carbs, which is over three times what I can have without raising my blood glucose.

Lesson learned!  When you are diabetic, you can't mess around and not pay attention.  I am paying the price by not getting to eat today.  Sigh.  Hopefully, my blood glucose will go back down before tomorrow morning.

10 DAYS DOWN.  81 DAYS TO GO.  8 FEAST DAYS AND 3 FAST DAYS.

4.6 POUNDS GONE.  13.4 POUNDS TO GO.  26% OF THE WAY TO MY GOAL!

AVERAGE WEIGHT SO FAR - 150.9     AVERAGE BLOOD GLUCOSE SO FAR - 90

I made a few charts to track my progress.  The orange lines are my goals. The blue lines are my actual results.  The last chart is a little heat map to show at a glance how often I actually have to fast to achieve the results I am after.

This is a personal challenge just for me, but if anyone reading would like to join me, please talk to your doctor and make sure that it will not conflict with your current medical condition or medications.  If you are taking the challenge, please be sure to let me know how you are doing!  Thanks for reading!

  1. I find your tracking so interesting. That is such a bummer about the nuts! I did a similar thing with beef jerky one time - although I caught the carbs after eating just a few bites, but when I bought it, I thought (without checking label) 'dried beef - that's a good choice'. We really have to be so darn vigilant.
I haven't gotten to the point that I know my 'safe' level of carbs - what monitor / test strips do you use?
    (congrats on your continued losses!)

    1. I am using the TrueTest monitor that is the Walgreens brand. The strips are pretty expensive, though, so I am switching to the Relione brand which I bought at Walmart.

      Do you track your carbs?

    2. I keep my carb intake low, but, no, I don't track them like you do. And though I've thought for several years it'd be helpful, I haven't ever purchased a monitor so I can see exactly how certain foods and/or carb amounts effect me....

  2. For some reason, there was a comment that was not published, so I am putting it here for Daytona:

    Daytona says:

Just thought I'd let you know that I am cheering for you! I am giving it a go, my blood glucose was 160 this morning and I will try a fasting day to see if that helps with tomorrow.

    1. Daytona, If you are a diabetic, either Type 1 or 2, you should not just try fasting without talking to your doctor first. Fasting will cause a drop in blood glucose, and if you are on blood glucose lowering drugs, this could cause a dangerous drop in blood glucose. PLEASE talk to your doctor before you attempt to fast! I am not a doctor, and you should seek medical advice rather than try a nutritional approach that may not be right for your condition.

I am not on insulin, and that makes a big difference.
